Brief Overview
This education program, delivered by Southern Sun Pathology, supports clinicians in upskilling their knowledge and skills in skin cancer diagnosis, management, and surgical techniques. The program includes access to accredited skin cancer workshops, specialised dermatopathology education, and RACGP, ACRRM and SkinPro–accredited surgical audit activities to support continuous clinical improvement.
Participants can engage in practical training, online learning modules, and histopathology-focused education, designed to enhance accuracy in skin cancer assessment, biopsy techniques, excision skills, and clinical decision-making in primary care.
Program Details
Upskilling in skin cancer techniques.
This activity supports participants to use their own clinical data to improve outcomes in skin cancer management. Through the accredited surgical audit component, clinicians will:
- Review and analyse their own procedural data, including surgical margins, complication rates, and pathology outcomes.
- Compare results against best-practice benchmarks to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
- Use audit findings to inform changes to clinical practice, refine surgical technique, and enhance patient safety.
- Track improvements over time, ensuring care remains aligned with evolving evidence and skin cancer management standards.
By integrating real-world practice data into learning, participants develop skills in outcome measurement, reflective practice, and ongoing quality improvement.
This activity promotes continuous improvement by encouraging participants to reflect on feedback and clinical outcomes. Participants will be supported to:
- Reflect on their surgical and clinical performance throughout the audit process, identifying aspects of care that could be strengthened.
- Consider feedback from patients and peers, including communication, procedural comfort, wound care education, and follow-up experiences.
- Use reflection to refine technique, documentation, and clinical decision-making, ensuring improved patient outcomes and safety.
- Identify at least one actionable change they will implement in their skin cancer management approach based on feedback and self-assessment.
This reflective process reinforces ongoing professional development and embeds a culture of quality improvement in everyday practice.
Program Outcome
Many clinicians require updated skills and knowledge in skin cancer detection, biopsy techniques, and surgical management to meet current best-practice standards.
There is a need for improved confidence in interpreting histopathology reports to guide treatment and follow-up.
Clinicians benefit from structured surgical audit activities to identify gaps in clinical practice and support continuous improvement in skin cancer care.
Increased access to accredited training and education helps reduce variation in skin cancer management and improves patient outcomes.
By completing this activity, participants will:
- Strengthen their knowledge of current best-practice guidelines in skin cancer detection and management.
- Develop practical skills in skin cancer assessment, biopsy, and surgical techniques appropriate for primary care.
- Enhance their understanding of histopathology and how to interpret reports to guide clinical decision-making.
- Build confidence in implementing evidence-based treatment pathways and recognising when to refer to specialist care.
The activity combines evidence-based education with practical skill development to ensure participants achieve the intended learning outcomes. Teaching methods include:
Interactive workshops focused on hands-on skin cancer assessment, biopsy, and surgical techniques.
Case-based learning to apply clinical decision-making and reinforce best-practice management pathways.
Histopathology education to improve confidence in interpreting pathology findings and guiding treatment.
Accredited surgical audit activities to support reflective practice and continuous improvement in clinical performance.
This blended approach ensures knowledge is translated into practical skills that can be confidently applied in clinical practice.
