Brief Overview
This 1-hour face-to-face workshop will guide General Practitioners in reviewing their performance in providing care for patients with or at risk of cardiovascular genetic conditions. The workshop will focus on reflecting on feedback from various sources to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes.
Program Details

This 1-hour workshop is entirely focused on developing skills and knowledge related to reviewing performance. Participants will gain practical experience in gathering, analysing, and reflecting on feedback from various sources, enabling them to use this information to enhance their clinical practice in the area of cardiovascular genetics.

Program Outcome

This activity addresses the need for GPs to review their performance to enhance skills and knowledge in this evolving area, improving patient care. The activity aligns with RACGP criteria 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3. RACGP Criterion 1.1: The needs assessment is informed by the increasing role of genetics in cardiovascular disease and the need for GPs to critically evaluate their practice. RACGP Criterion 1.2: The activity is specifically designed for cardiovascular health and patient-centred care. It also aligns with the MBA CPD Registration Standard by promoting patient safety and quality care through performance review. RACGP Criterion 1.3: The activity embeds culturally safe practice, health equity, professionalism, and ethical practice by encouraging GPs to reflect on their communication, decision-making, and referral practices in cardiovascular genetics, ensuring equitable and patient-centred care.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the principles of reviewing performance in primary care and their relevance to cardiovascular genetics.
  • Identify key areas for review in their practice related to the care of patients with or at risk of cardiovascular genetic conditions.
  • Recognise various sources of feedback on their performance, including patient feedback, peer feedback, and self-reflection.
  • Apply methods for gathering and analysing feedback from different sources.
  • Reflect critically on the feedback received to identify strengths and areas for improvement in their practice.
  • Develop a practical performance improvement plan to address identified areas for improvement.
  • Implement their performance improvement plan in their practice.

This workshop is designed to meet the learning outcomes through interactive and reflective methods, aligning with RACGP Standard 3, 'CPD activities are designed to achieve the learning outcomes.' A genetic counsellor and a geneticist will provide focused presentations on the principles of reviewing performance and their application in primary care. The content of these presentations is evidence-based and relevant, developed in collaboration with specialist GPs with expertise in cardiovascular genetics. This collaborative approach ensures alignment with Criterion 3.3, which emphasizes the importance of specialist involvement and evidence-based resources. The presentations will guide participants through the process of reviewing their performance. Participants will engage in discussions to explore the relevance of reviewing performance to their practice and to share experiences and challenges related to cardiovascular genetics care. This encourages active participation and peer learning, aligning with Criterion 3.1, which highlights the use of contemporary educational practice and opportunities for interaction. Participants will work in small groups to analyse case scenarios and reflect on potential feedback from patients, peers, and self. This hands-on activity allows participants to apply the learned concepts and develop skills in feedback analysis and reflection, directly addressing the learning outcomes (Criterion 3.2). Real-world case studies will be used to demonstrate the application of reviewing performance principles in various cardiovascular genetics scenarios. These case studies were developed in collaboration with specialist GPs to provide practical examples and help participants understand how to use feedback to improve their practice. Participants will engage in individual self-reflection exercises to identify their strengths and areas for improvement in their own practice. This promotes self-awareness and facilitates the development of personalised performance improvement plans. Participants will develop a practical action plan to implement changes in their practice based on their reflection and feedback analysis. This ensures that the activity translates into tangible improvements in patient care. The selection of these methods is justified by their effectiveness in achieving the learning outcomes, which focus on developing reflective practice and performance improvement skills. The workshop format allows for interactive learning, group work, case analysis, and self-reflection, which are essential for skill development in this area. The assessment methods are fit for purpose, as the learning outcomes focus on the ability to analyse feedback and develop a performance improvement plan, which is best achieved through practical application and reflective exercises (Criterion 3.4). The program plan includes details of facilitators (genetic counsellor and geneticist), interactive elements, and resource provision, further demonstrating alignment with Criterion 3.2.

This evaluation strategy is designed to assess the effectiveness of the workshop and ensure ongoing quality improvement, aligning with RACGP Standard 4, 'Evaluation strategy informs quality improvement of the CPD activity.' Participants will complete evaluation forms to provide feedback on the relevance of the content, the effectiveness of the delivery methods, and the likelihood of applying the learned strategies in their practice. This incorporates a range of perspectives (participant feedback) in the data collection, as required by Criterion 4.1, and provides valuable insights into the participant experience. The evaluation forms will include open-ended questions to collect detailed comments on what participants found most useful and areas for improvement, particularly regarding the practicality of the feedback analysis tools and the action planning process. The qualitative data will be analysed to identify areas where the program can be strengthened and refined for future iterations, with a focus on improving the practicality and usefulness of the feedback analysis resources and guidance. This analysis will form the basis of quality improvement (QI) recommendations. The evaluation process, including the methodology and data collection methods, will be documented, and the evaluation data will be provided to those involved in the activity's development and delivery, fulfilling the requirements of Criterion 4.1. Furthermore, the analysis of evaluation data will directly inform quality improvement of the CPD activity, as specified in Criterion 4.2. The evaluation report, including QI recommendations, will be provided to the RACGP. Evidence of changes made to the activity as a result of evaluation data will be documented and provided to the RACGP, demonstrating a commitment to continuous quality improvement. Examples of potential changes include modifying the feedback analysis tools or templates based on feedback regarding their usability, revising the action planning guidance to address any challenges or barriers identified by participants, and adjusting the program's focus or scope based on feedback regarding its relevance to general practice. By systematically collecting and analysing evaluation data and using it to drive improvements, we ensure that the CPD activity remains relevant, effective, and aligned with the needs of GPs, meeting the requirements of RACGP Standard 4.
Core Medical Practice Values

The program will encourage participants to reflect on how cultural factors may influence their communication, assessment, and management of patients with or at risk of cardiovascular genetic conditions. Participants will be prompted to consider strategies to ensure culturally safe and respectful care for all patients.

The program will encourage participants to consider how socioeconomic factors, geographic location, and other social determinants of health may create inequalities in access to and quality of care for patients with cardiovascular genetic conditions. Participants will be prompted to identify strategies to address any identified disparities in their practice.

The program will reinforce the professional responsibility of GPs to provide high-quality, evidence-based care, including the appropriate use of genetic testing and counseling in the context of cardiovascular disease. Reviewing performance is presented as a tool to enhance professional practice and ensure accountability to patients.

The program will encourage participants to consider ethical principles related to informed consent, confidentiality, and genetic information when reviewing their practice in the area of cardiovascular genetics.
