Brief Overview
The headspace Early Psychosis in-service is an educational session designed to provide healthcare professionals particularly GPs, nurses, and allied health workers with up-to-date knowledge and practical skills related to early identification, referral, and management of young people (aged 12–25) at risk of developing psychosis or experiencing their first episode of psychosis.
Program Details

Knowledge: Identify early signs of psychosis and understand referral pathways to headspace Early Psychosis program.

Skills: Conduct screening for psychosis and communicate effectively with young people and families.

Attitudes: Adopt a compassionate, recovery-focused approach and recognise the GP’s role in early intervention.

Program Outcome

The headspace Early Psychosis in-service addresses critical gaps in healthcare professionals’ knowledge and skills related to early identification and timely referral of young people at risk of or experiencing first episode of psychosis. The activity also enhances understanding of holistic, youth-friendly intervention including psychological therapy, psychiatric support, and functional recovery support that are essential for improving long-term mental health, social, and educational outcomes. By bridging these gaps, the in-service supports earlier engagement and better collaborative care, ultimately reducing the duration of untreated psychosis and improving patient recovery trajectories.

  • Recognise early warning signs and risk factors of psychosis in young people aged 12–25
  • Understand the importance of reducing the duration of untreated psychosis through prompt referral
  • Learn the referral pathway to headspace Early Psychosis program
  • Gain knowledge of the wrap-around, holistic care provided, including psychological therapy, psychiatric support, and functional recovery intervention
  • Increase confidence in managing early psychosis within their clinical practice, improving patient outcomes

The activity is delivered as an in-person presentation followed by a facilitated discussion. The interactive discussion encourages participants to reflect on the material, ask questions, and share experiences, reinforcing learning and promoting application of knowledge in real-world settings.

Following the in-person presentation and discussion, I send an email to participants encouraging them to ask any questions or provide feedback about the session. This open line of communication helps gauge their understanding and identify any areas that may need further clarification or improvement.
