Educational Activities (EA)

Reviewing Performance (RP)
Measuring Outcomes (MO)
Brief Overview

This educational session provides clinicians with an updated, evidence-based review of the management of diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The session will cover current Australian and international clinical guidelines, treatment indications, and PBS-listed therapeutic options that support optimal patient outcomes.

Through a combination of presentation and interactive discussion, participants will enhance their clinical confidence in applying best-practice treatment strategies, initiating appropriate therapy, and slowing CKD progression in patients with diabetes while reducing cardiovascular and renal risk.

Program Details

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the latest evidence-based guidelines for managing diabetes in patients with CKD.

  2. Identify appropriate PBS-listed treatment options and indications for use in this patient population.

  3. Apply best-practice treatment strategies that address glycaemic control, renal protection, and cardiovascular risk.

  4. Integrate updated management principles into routine clinical practice to improve long-term patient outcomes.

This activity will support participants to use clinical data and practice insights to improve care quality for patients with diabetes and CKD. Participants will be encouraged to:

  • Reflect on their current patient outcomes, prescribing patterns, and CKD management approaches.

  • Identify opportunities to align treatment with guideline-directed care and PBS criteria.

  • Use follow-up data such as HbA1c, eGFR, UACR, and medication adherence to evaluate treatment effectiveness and patient progress.

  • Apply these insights to adjust management plans and improve long-term renal and cardiovascular outcomes.

By integrating outcome-based reflection into clinical practice, participants will enhance their ability to monitor results, optimise treatment choices, and stay aligned with evolving best-practice standards.

This activity will encourage participants to reflect on their own clinical practice and use feedback to enhance performance and patient care. Participants will be guided to:

  • Self-assess their current approach to managing diabetes and CKD, including prescribing, monitoring, and patient education practices.

  • Reflect on feedback from patients, peers, or collaborative discussions during the session to identify areas for improvement.

  • Consider how updated knowledge on guideline-based treatment and PBS access can refine their clinical decision-making.

  • Identify one specific change they will implement in their practice to enhance the quality of diabetes and CKD management.

This reflective process supports continuous improvement by encouraging clinicians to apply new learning, evaluate its impact, and adapt their practice to improve patient outcomes.

Program Outcome

  • Many clinicians report limited up-to-date knowledge of current guidelines for managing diabetes in patients with chronic kidney disease.

  • There is uncertainty regarding PBS-listed treatment options, including when to initiate or escalate newer therapies with renal and cardiovascular benefits.

  • Clinicians require greater confidence in aligning treatment decisions with evidence-based care pathways to reduce CKD progression and improve outcomes.

  • A need exists for improved understanding of holistic management, integrating glycaemic control, renal protection, and cardiovascular risk reduction.
