Brief Overview
This interactive educational session provides general practitioners with an overview of osteopathy as a form of manual medicine, including how it differs from physiotherapy and other allied health modalities. Participants will gain insight into how osteopaths assess, diagnose, and treat a range of musculoskeletal conditions, with a particular focus on head, neck, and jaw dysfunction. Delivered by Heads Up Osteopathy, this session will explore opportunities for collaboration and referral, helping GPs understand when osteopathic care may complement medical management for their patients.

Program Outcome

Many GPs have limited understanding of osteopathy as a clinical discipline and how it differs from physiotherapy and other manual therapies. There is a knowledge gap in recognising conditions that may benefit from osteopathic assessment and treatment. GPs may lack confidence in discussing or referring patients for osteopathic care due to unfamiliarity with its scope and evidence base. Increased awareness of local osteopathic services (such as Heads Up Osteopathy) can improve collaboration and patient access to appropriate care.

By completing this activity, participants will:

  • Understand what an Osteopath is and the principles underpinning osteopathic practice as a form of manual medicine.
  • Differentiate between osteopathy and physiotherapy, including how their assessment and treatment approaches vary.
  • Gain insight into how osteopaths treat, including hands-on techniques, holistic assessment, and functional rehabilitation.
  • Recognise the range of conditions osteopaths manage, particularly musculoskeletal and postural dysfunctions.
  • Explore how osteopathic treatment may assist in managing somatic tinnitus and sleep-disordered breathing, and understand when to refer patients for osteopathic assessment.

A short powerpoint with the ability to ask questions.

I listen to the questions that are asked and feedback that I'm given and make changes to the presentation as required.
