Brief Overview
In this session, Dr. Samuel, an Otolaryngologist, will introduce himself and provide an overview of the ENT services available to support general practitioners and their patients. The session will cover key clinical areas including adenoiditis, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), deviated septum, otitis media, and head and neck cancer. Participants will gain a better understanding of common ENT presentations, appropriate referral criteria, and management strategies that can be initiated in primary care. The session aims to strengthen collaboration between GPs and ENT specialists, promoting timely intervention and improved patient outcomes. Feedback will be collected at the end of the session to identify further educational needs and guide future ENT-focused events. Follow-up communication will provide additional resources and referral information.
Program Details

By completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify common ENT conditions such as adenoiditis, otitis media, and BPPV in general practice.

  2. Apply evidence-based strategies for initial assessment and management.

  3. Determine when to refer patients for otolaryngology review.

  4. Understand the role of ENT specialists in diagnosing and managing complex cases, including head and neck cancer.

  5. Engage in collaborative discussions and provide feedback to improve referral pathways and patient care.

This activity helps participants develop skills in evaluating clinical outcomes and referral effectiveness within general practice through reflection and data-driven review.

  • GPs will be encouraged to review patterns of ENT-related presentations in their own patient populations (e.g., recurrent ear infections, chronic sinus issues, or vertigo) to identify trends and opportunities for earlier referral.

  • The session promotes using patient follow-up data to assess outcomes post-referral and ensure continuity of care.

  • Participants will gain awareness of how tracking referral outcomes and feedback from specialists can improve clinical decision-making and patient pathways.

  • By integrating these insights, GPs will strengthen their ability to measure care quality and align with best-practice ENT management standards.

Participants will reflect on feedback from the session, peers, and their own clinical practice to enhance ENT referral and management skills. Follow-up emails and resources will support ongoing self-assessment and improvement in patient care and collaboration with specialists.

Program Outcome

GPs often require greater understanding of ENT referral pathways and indications for specialist review. Knowledge gaps exist in recognising and managing common otolaryngology conditions in primary care. There is a need for enhanced collaboration between GPs and ENT specialists for coordinated care. GPs benefit from exposure to updated diagnostic and management approaches for ear, nose, and throat conditions.

Improve GP awareness of common ENT conditions and their initial management.

Strengthen understanding of appropriate referral timing and criteria for specialist intervention.

Promote collaborative communication between GPs and otolaryngologists.

Encourage feedback and shared learning to shape ongoing education and service alignment.

By completing this activity, participants will be able to: Identify common ENT conditions such as adenoiditis, otitis media, and BPPV in general practice. Apply evidence-based strategies for initial assessment and management. Determine when to refer patients for otolaryngology review. Didactic presentation by Dr. Samuel on ENT conditions and specialist services. Interactive Q&A and case examples to contextualise learning. Feedback forms collected from attendees to evaluate session effectiveness and identify future topic interests. Follow-up email communication to share educational resources and referral details.
