Brief Overview
This educational session provides general practitioners with an update on psychiatry-led day programs designed to support patients experiencing drug and alcohol addiction, dual diagnosis, and co-occurring psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders. Participants will learn about the structure, referral pathways, and therapeutic approaches of closed group day programs commencing later this year. The session explores how these programs integrate evidence-based psychiatric care with psychological and behavioural interventions to enhance recovery and relapse prevention. By improving awareness of available outpatient treatment options, this program helps GPs identify suitable patients, initiate timely referrals, and strengthen collaboration between primary care and psychiatric services to achieve optimal mental health outcomes.
Program Details

By completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Expand knowledge of psychiatry-led day programs and their role in supporting addiction and mental health recovery.
  • Develop skills in identifying patients who would benefit from structured psychiatric intervention and initiating timely referrals.
  • Enhance communication and confidence in discussing addiction, recovery, and mental health care with patients.
  • Adopt a collaborative attitude toward shared care between general practice and specialist psychiatry services.
  • Promote early intervention and continuity of care to improve long-term mental health outcomes for patients.

Program Outcome

General practitioners often need enhanced knowledge and confidence in identifying and managing patients with addiction and mental health conditions who may benefit from structured psychiatric day programs. This activity addresses gaps in: Understanding referral pathways and inclusion criteria for psychiatry-led day programs. Building confidence in initiating conversations about addiction, recovery, and mental health support. Strengthening collaboration and continuity of care between general practice and specialist psychiatric services. Increasing awareness of early intervention and relapse prevention strategies to improve long-term patient outcomes.

The activity combines expert-led presentations, case-based discussion, and interactive Q&A to ensure participants can apply learning directly to clinical practice.

  • Presentations provide evidence-based updates on addiction and psychiatric day programs, including referral processes and patient suitability.
  • Case studies demonstrate real-world application and support clinical reasoning in identifying and referring appropriate patients.
  • Group discussion and reflection encourage participants to share experiences, ask questions, and integrate new knowledge into their workflow.

This interactive design promotes both theoretical understanding and practical skill development, ensuring participants achieve the intended learning outcomes.

Participant feedback is collected through evaluation forms and post-session surveys to assess the relevance, clarity, and impact of the session. Feedback is reviewed to identify strengths, areas for improvement, and emerging topics of interest for future sessions. Facilitators and organisers analyse reflections and participation patterns to refine content, case studies, and delivery methods. Continuous improvement is ensured by updating educational materials and clinical examples based on participant input and current evidence-based guidelines.
