Kidney stones in general practice - assessment, diagnosis, intervention, management and prevention strategies

Overview
Urological surgeon Dr Fairleigh Reeves will provide an overview of best-practice assessment for acute renal colic, when urgent urological intervention is recommended, together with evidence-based metabolic and dietary prevention strategies. Conservative and surgical treatments will be explained including when one is recommended over the other.

Case studies will be used for context.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Summarise the recommended workup for patients presenting with suspected kidney stones.
  2. List the red flags for patients presenting with kidney stones that warrant urgent referral to a urological surgeon or to an emergency department.
  3. Counsel patients by providing pratical advie and strategies for lifestyle and diet modifications.
