By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:
Describe key advances in contemporary orthotic design and how these differ from traditional orthoses commonly encountered in general practice.
Recognise patients in general practice who may benefit from modern orthotic intervention, including those with pectus deformities.
Identify appropriate indications and optimal timing for referral to an orthotist, particularly for early, non-surgical management.
Apply practical knowledge to patient counselling by addressing common concerns about comfort, compliance, and expected outcomes.
Demonstrate increased confidence in collaborative care with orthotists to support improved patient outcomes.
The session aims to improve GP awareness of modern, patient-centred orthotic solutions, clarify appropriate indications and timing for referral, and enhance confidence in identifying patients who may benefit from early orthotic intervention—particularly children and adolescents with pectus deformities. By addressing these gaps, the activity supports earlier referral, improved patient counselling, and better multidisciplinary care.
